.243 Winchester (85/90 GR Using Nosler Bullets)

I have tried IMR and and get groups in the I plan on attacking this rifle right away next summer and want to have some bullets ready to try. What would you recommend I try? The rifle is a Browning XBolt and I would like to stay away from the Btip because I have a nice load with the 70 grain Btip in the rifle and don't want to have two hunting rounds with the same color tip.

I use green for mid weight bullets and red for heavy weight bullets. Haven't hunted with the SST though so I don't have first hand experience with it. The 95 BTip is slick for small to medium sized deer. I just did some reading on the Sierra grain Pro Hunter.

Has anyone used them on deer? You ruled out what has proven to be the best 6mm deer bullet I've ever used, the 95 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip. That particular bullet was a pet project of a bullet designer at Nosler, Gale Root. He knew what he was doing, and built what may be the perfect 6mm deer bullet. It's got a very thick base and a tapered jacket.

My son and I have used it to great effect on both mule deer and whitetail at ranges from Very Close to yards or so - I can't remember anything but one-shot drops. It's also the single most accurate bullet I've ever shot from my 6mm Remington. Doggone it, you're not interested. Then I'd go with the gr Speer, alas, Speer no longer makes that fabled game-getter. And then the 85 grain Nosler Partition - but that's not shooting well from your rifle. I used those all the way back in the 's.

Shame it didn't work out for you, because the muzzle velocity on it can be scorching! Man, I'm running out of options You've eliminated my three most favored 6mm deer bullets!

Okay, one more, the grain Nosler Solid Base! Oh crud, they don't make that anymore either. But it was a good bullet and I've got quite a few left. Accurate and lethal. Usually an exit wound too. The gr Partition performs very well, just like the other Partitions, it does great on game. Also, I was pleasantly surprised and pleased to see it producing sub MOA groups at yards. Not a lot under 3", but under, solidly under. I'd go with that in a heartbeat - and have some right hereNotice: This site is not mobile friendly, we recommend you download tapatalk for a mobile friendly experience of our forum.

Hodgdon says max with IMR is Now, can H be slower or near equal burn rate to IMR in this application? Not 90 gr. AB but use 42grs. H with the 95gr. BT no problems and accurate in my Husqavarna. Posted: Thu Dec 24, am. Becareful trying to compare Nosler and Hodgdon-- many times apples and oranges! Paradoxically, you can use either if you stay with their receipe.

I just worked up a "new" load for my win with 90gr ballistic tips and settled on Hodgdon max is I went there, but accuracy wasn't as good. No pressure signs, just opened up. Posted: Thu Dec 24, pm. I just thought it strange that this combo is the only one I think I have ever seen that listed more grains of H than IMR as max load in a manual. I figured it is probably a mistake in Hodgdons manual.

Powders themselves give differing burn rates under differing conditions of compression and weight of the projectile. The difference in firing systems introduces differences.

Thus, each load must be identical in every respect to make absolute comparisons. This is the reason each of us is responsible to ensure that the load we work with is safe for our firing condition. I did learn early on to take shoulder shots with the partition, I had a couple pencil through the lungs when I shot tight behind the shoulder to save meat, and didn't hit a rib.

The recovered bullet was the classic partition you see in pics-front gone, jacket folded back over the rear core. I'm launching them at fps best accuracy in my gun. Good Luck. Joined: Aug Tim, Can't say I know much but have some opinions. Have only used the 85 partition in several.

When I started to work up a load in '95 I thought it was a mistake so checked data from Alliant and one other source I can't recall.

All sources showed the close to the same s. I then looked at data for 6mm Rem. Why has this mistake not been corrected? This interests me as well, I have some RL22 I planned on using for. Posted: Fri Jan 07, pm. Goat, I don't think we'll get any help from the pro side. I e-mailed Alliant and got back a generic response that did nothing to answer the question raised.

It's a shame because RL22 is the best powder I have found for the 6mms with heavier bullets that I have worked up loads for. RL22, FM, 95 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip, fps. NBT, went up to 47 but velocity dropped off as did accuracy. Posted: Wed Jan 12, pm.

I'm still curious as to what Nosler has to say, butI'll probably work up my own load this weekend when I get a chance. Posted: Thu Jan 13, am. Here is the reply to my second e-mail to Alliant: At some point, I will get the lab to shoot this again.

I'm going to give H a pretty heavy work out with it. I have a bunch of them, but I stumbled on a load with 80gr. TTSXs that shoots better than my ability to hold! Posted: Fri Nov 09, pm. Kurt, it sounds like we have. It's funny, I couldn't get either of the Remington factory loads I shot gr CoreLokt and some sort of 80gr SP, I'm too lazy to look into much better than 2", then I tried a work up on the TTSXs and it shot a group so good it scared me, particularly since it only has a 6x Leupy on it.

That is the one I am going to try pretty soon Fotis. Probably try RL19 first, but that is what I am looking for. Should be a coyote smoker too.

I hear ya there. I tried to force-feed that rifle every gr offering imaginable.

Regardless of powder or charge weight, it just wouldn't shoot them any smaller than patterns. RL19 was the most consistent while was the fastest.

Range report Posted: Tue Aug 19, pm.

It was cloudy and misty this morning but this is one of the last times I had to get out and shoot at a very relaxed pace.

I had 6 rifles to shoot and hoped for the best. The goal is to get them all up and ready for deer season by September 1. I have some 85gr Partitions on the way to try next. My Ruger was next with AccuBonds, I wanted to zero and shoot one last group before season.

Group I tried different lengths. Since the last range trip, I took the rifle apart to put the new trigger spring in. All I could do is smile thinking about how my father-in-law said it was not accurate!!! I will load up the 2. Sauer I shot 2 shots to get it zeroed then a 3 shot group. The group was 2. Last time out it shot a. I don't know what happened with the last shot, but the speed was lower. I hope to get a group close to today's then work on seating depth.

One thing I did notice, was the speeds of my rounds compared to last time out. Today they were on average fps slower across the board. I tried to set the tripod up in the same place. I could not have been off by more than a foot, if anything, it was a little lower today than last time.
